Description

A RUSSIAN SILVERED COPPER AND BRASS OKLAD OVER OIL ON PANEL ICON OF ST. NICHOLAS, EARLY/MID 20TH CENTURY, each corner of the oklad has a Coptic cross within an eight pointed star surrounded by winding fretwork, and centered by Cyrillic writing. The brass engraved center surrounds St. Nicholas holding the book of gospels and his other hand in benediction, he is crowned with a radiating silver halo and flanked by Mary and Jesus seated on clouds. Height: 9 3/4" Width: 8 1/8" Depth: 1/2" Provenance: Estate of the late Charles A. and Betti F. Saunders, Houston, Texas.

Condition

The oklad mild dents and damages at edges commensurate with age. The paint is observed with some chips and flaking, but otherwise in very good condition.
