Description
Russia, ca. mid-19th century CE. Russian Orthodox hand painted Jesus Christ icon, hand painted in egg tempera and gesso on wood panel with a repousse and chased brass cover (riza or oklad, literally means trimming), the icon painted and oklad struck with Greek letters IX and XC (Jesus Christ) and other phrases in old Cyrillic lettering. Panel cross members or back slats indicate that this icon dates prior to 1890 CE. A fine example that is perhaps an unusual version of Christ in Pantocrator pose but holding an orb symbolizing the universe rather than the holy book, all with strong painting and attractive ornamental oklad. Size: 8.5" W x 10.5" H (21.6 cm x 26.7 cm).
