Eastern Europe, Russia, ca. 19th century CE. A beautiful brass icon with four hinged panels depicting a comprehensive narrative of the life of Jesus Christ. The top of the far-left panel shows the Crucifixion, overseen by angels as well as God the Father. Below, in clockwise order, is the Annunciation; birth of Jesus; presentation of Jesus in the temple; and scenes from the life of the Holy family. The next panel displays Christ joining His Father in Heaven on the upper section, with Jesus in the temple; His baptism by Saint John; entrance into Jerusalem; and His glorification in Heaven. Installation of the Holy Cross is the theme of the following panel on the upper portion; below which shows Christ greeting His disciples after the resurrection; Christ’s glorification surrounded by angels; death of the Virgin Mary; and the descent of the Holy Ghost to the enthroned Virgin Mary. Size: 15.2" W x 6.55" H (38.6 cm x 16.6 cm).
Mary is the central theme on the last panel representing her enthronement in heaven; below which shows an icon of the Virgin holding the infant Jesus with Saints Alexander and Cyril; King Vasiley presents himself in the next panel; followed by Saints Antony and Alexey; and then Saints Antony and Theodosius, Abbot of the Monastery of the Caves of Kiev. The front 'cover' features an elaborate scene of the Cross.

Condition
Age-commensurate surface wear, slight bending to overall form, small nicks along peripheries, fading to details, small areas of discoloration within interior, and minor areas of oxidation. Left-most panel has broken hinge pin, otherwise very good overall.
