AN ANTIQUE RUSSIAN BRASS PATINATED OKLAD MOUNTED POLYCHROME PAINTED ICON OF THE MOTHER OF GOD OF JOY TO ALL WHO SORROW ON WOOD PANEL, 19TH CENTURY, the repousé pierced oaklad lays over a scene of a figure of Christ pantocrater appearing in a cloud above a haloed, black star painted cloak draped Virgin Mother, her hand raised in blessing, flanked by two winged angels above four seated male figures who ask her for comfort in their suffering, with Cyrillic painted writing in the upper portion of the image. Height: 9" Width: 7 1/8" Depth: 3/4" Provenance: Estate of the late Charles A. and Betti F. Saunders, Houston, Texas.
Condition
The oklad with a notable loss at the upper right corner, at the bottom right corner, and some cracks intermittently throughout.
