Description
Portrait of a Young 18th c. Nobleman in court dress, possibly Tsar Paul I (Pavel Petrovich) of Russia (1754-1801, reigned 1796-1801, assassinated). oil on a rectangular copper sheet, with oval painted spandrel, unsigned, resting loose in a remnant of the red leather gilt tooled case, 4 3/4" x 3 5/8". Bend and loss to one corner.
The reference to crescent moon and star is obscure, unless he is in an ambassadorial office to the Ottoman Empire.
