Description
"THE LAST REVOLUTIONARY SOLDIER"
DANIEL FREDERICK BAKEMAN (1759 – April 5, 1869) was the last survivor receiving a veteran's pension for service in the American Revolution. Rare carte de visite photograph of Bakeman showing him half-length and seated in a greatcoat with cane in hand, captioned at bottom where he is described as: "The Last Revolutionary Soldier". Bakeman would die only a few months after this image was captured. Some white spotting and a marginal flaw, overall very good. Bakeman claimed to have served in a Tryon County militia unit commanded by Marinus Willett; he later stated that the records of his service burned in a house fire. On February 14, 1867, Congress passed a special act which granted a Revolutionary War pension to Bakeman. The act was required because Bakeman could not prove that he had served in New York.
