Description
Flat-weaves of this type are quite rare, though on the surface, this may just seem like another gajari type weaving. The word “gajari” refers to the technique of weaving, rather than anything else, though this example technically does not adhere to that formula. There is no ‘backside’ to this piece, the front and the back are, in fact, virtually interchangeable. Most ‘gajari’ weavings are woven in a different style, with loose strands of colored wool brought to the surface when needed to complete the design. The patterns seen in these weavings appear to be very ‘tribal’, primal patterns that are seen in flat weaves of this type and apparently unrelated to those seen in the other rugs/flat-weaves/textiles attributable to these people. Some of them appear to be related to jewelry designs, possibly used as talismans or blessings for fertility. The abstract manner in which the designs appear is partially due to the fact these ‘kilims’ are composed of longer bands of weaving that have been subsequently cut and sewn together to make the cover or ‘Kilim’. The condition is excellent, with no holes, repairs or re-weaves. The colors are all derived from natural dyes. SIZE 5'10" x 6'8"
