Description
Central Asia, South India, Tamil Nadu, ca. 19th century CE. A hand-carved wooden shrine panel depicting Ayyanar (also Ayianar), a guardian deity, sitting with bent legs atop a tiered plinth. Ayyanar holds a curved sword in his right hand while leaning his head and body opposite his raised knee between a pair of reared creatures. The shape of this panel suggests it was perhaps an architectural element at one time. Size: 2.6" L x 4.7" W x 6.5" H (6.6 cm x 11.9 cm x 16.5 cm); 6.9" H (17.5 cm) on included custom stand.
