Description
Near East, Palestine & Israel, Hebron, ca. 19th century CE; Central Asia, India, Naga peoples, ca. mid-20th century CE. A collection of Hebron beads of a yellow variety, strung together in modern times on a raffia cord as a wearable necklace, and a separate Naga glass bead necklace comprised of many strands, and a woven macrame terminal held together with a button clasp. Hebron beads were made in the Israeli city of Hebron from the 12th up until the late 19th century by melting sand and Dead Sea salt then winding the hot glass onto a mandrel, giving them their signature coarse and opaque appearance. The Naga people are a combination of tribes in northeastern India and northwestern Burma known for their artistry, particularly when it comes to jewelry- both men and women dress in ceremonial clothing and ornaments, including necklaces like this one. Size Hebron strand: 26" L (66 cm); beads: 0.8" L x 0.65" W (2 cm x 1.7 cm)
