Description
Magna Graecia, southern Italy, ca. 325 BCE. A superb, black-glazed Greek guttos (vessel for holding oil, usually olive oil), of a classic form with a splayed/stepped foot, ribbed, rounded shoulder, long spout with a tri-stepped rim, a raised, convex looped handle, and a central medallion modeled in relief featuring a dramatic visage of Silenus, the mythical teacher and drinking companion of Dionysus, Greek god of wine, winemaking, and the grape harvest - and furthermore, by virtue of the inebriated state brought about by the ingestion of such fermented libations of the vine, the deity associated with madness, theatre, and spiritual ecstacy. A beautiful example in great condition with a crossed X makers mark beneath the handle. Size: 6.375" W x 5.75" H (16.2 cm x 14.6 cm)
