Item Details
Description
Greece, Hellenistic Period, late 3rd to mid-2nd century BCE. This is a large, buff terracotta transport amphora. It has an ovoid body ending in a tip with a flat foot; twin long handles rise from the shoulder to the spout. Lacking its cork and pitch stopper, the original contents of this amphora are unknown, but based on the shape, it may have been olive oil or wine. Amphorae formed the basis of the Mediterranean economy - storage vessels for transporting goods by ship or over land. This is a nice intact example; although it lacks a stamp for a manufacturer, that may just mean that it was locally produced. Size: 11" W x 23" H (27.9 cm x 58.4 cm)

Provenance: Ex - Julie & Ugo Rempte collection, NY acquired before 1980.
