Item Details
Description
Greece, Hellenistic Period, ca. 320 to 290 BCE. A black glazed ceramic boar effigy with well-molded piglet details; handle and spout. Added foliate white painting remains to body. Askos is the name given in modern terminology to a type of ancient Greek pottery vessel used to pour small quantities of liquids such as oil. This example departs from the typically created flat shaped vessels with spouts at both ends with its spectacular boar representation. Size: 5-7/8"L (14.5 cm).

Cf. Arielle P. Kozloff, Animals in Ancient Art from the Leo Mildenberg Collection. Indiana University Press, 1981.
