Description
Greece, Hellenistic period, ca. late 4th century to late 2nd century BCE. A mold-made plaque depicting the broad face of a gorgon, shown here with a wide, open mouth, small eyes, and a head full of tightly curled hair. Perhaps this was once part of a decorative frieze. The concept of the gorgon, a frightening, beast-like, female creature, is at least as old as Homer and continued to be used as a monstrous symbol throughout the Roman period, especially popular as decoration on pottery. Size: 7.75" W x 6.7" H (19.7 cm x 17 cm)
