Item Details
Description
Italy, Apulia / Daunian, ca. 300 BCE. Daunian society was a mixture of native Italians and Greeks who had settled in the area, with their pottery influenced by both cultures. This is a pleasantly plump oinochoe, or pouring vessel, with a single flat strap-style handle and black banded linear decorations around the body and up the handle over a cream background; these geometric decorations are called listati. The wide strap handle is a particular signifier of Daunian pottery. The piece also has a flat, flared rim. Size: 5.3" W x 5.4" H (13.5 cm x 13.7 cm).

Provenance: Ex-private Porter collection acquired in 1964
