Magna Graecia, Southern Italy, Apulia/Daunian, ca. 300 BCE. A lovely terracotta askos, a single-handled vessel for holding valuable liquids and pouring small quantities, hence its small spout, designed to prevent evaporation. The body of the vessel is painted with black and red striations and stylized geometrics on a cream ground. A nice example of this classic form. Size: 4.875" W x 5" H (12.4 cm x 12.7 cm)

Provenance: Ex- private collection of James Farmer, Maryland, collected from major galleries and auction houses between 1995 and 2005
