AMERICAN BISQUE PORCELAIN CERAMIC ADVERTISING STATUE, depicting the "sleeping sentinel", having a center pedestal with archway, molded as stones, a newspaper boy on one side, and a sleeping soldier leaning against the side opposite the boy; accented in cobalt blue, the center pedestal reads "AT HIS POST" and the base has "GREENPOINT / UNION PORCELAIN WORKS". Very good visual condition. Restoration to back upper section including rear corner of center pedestal, 1/2" flake to underside of foot rim, manufacturing crack on one corner of center pedestal toward base and manufacturing cracks where figures meet the center pedestal.

Catalogue Note: During the Civil War, on the night of August 31, 1861, Thomas Scott, a private in the Co. K, of the Third Vermont was on sentinel duty by the Chain Bridge near Fort Marcy, Virginia, and fell asleep at his post. He was tried by court martial and sentenced to death, only to be pardoned by President Lincoln. News of the "sleeping sentinel" and his pardon by Abraham Lincoln was reported across the country in numerous newspapers, poems, and other publications were made on the topic.
