Description
Roman Empire, ca. 43 BCE to 400 CE. This is a cast bronze applique of a bust of a goddess, Diana (Artemis to the Greeks), showing a woman's face and chest with styled hair and headdress similar to the famous sculpture Diana of Versailles held in the Louvre; she wears a sash across her chest. Appliques like this were attached to larger items, like horse tack, chariots, domestic items, etc. Diana was a powerful figure, the goddess of the hunt and of childbirth, associated with wild spaces and animals.
