Description
Papua New Guinea, early 20th century. There is a long tradition of mask-making from skulls, especially among the highland people of Papua New Guinea. This particular one uses an animal (possibly canid?) skull -- the top and part of the Zygomatic arches -- to form a human face-shaped mask. The face has a pronounced nose and mouth as well as shells for eyes. It has been given painted details with black and red pigment. Size: 4.25" W x 6.6" H (10.8 cm x 16.8 cm).
