Orig wraps lightly edgeworn, more wear to edges of No. 4. Spines (made of paper) are defective, internal loosening. Lithographs very good to near fine, some with tanning to white areas. ++ Vol I, No. 1 (Dec. 1937): 4 original color lithographs (“The Four Elements”), by Fernand Leger (Water, p6); Joan Miro (Air, pp11-12); Rattner (Fire, p34); and Bores (at p39). Wraps designed by Matisse. ++ Vol I, No. 2 (Spring 1938): 4 orig color lithographs: 2 by Kandinsky (“Stars” and “Comets,” pp94, 96) and Andre Masson (“The Moon” and “The Sun,” on pp101, 103). ++ Vol I, No. 3: 4 orig color lithographs (Spring by Chagall, Summer by Miro, Autumn by Rattner, and Winter by Paul Klee). Wraps designed by Pierre Bonnard. Some text pages have marginalia or underlining in colored pencil. ++ Vol I, No. 4 (Jan.-Mar. 1939): 16 pages of lithographs: 4 pages by Henri Mattisse (“The Dance,” double-page on pp52-53 and simple design in orange ink only on pp51 and 54); 4 pages of color lithographs by Andre Derain (“Au Jardin d’Allah,” pp89-90 and pp95-96); and 8 pages of anonymous lithographs after Tacinum Sanitatus, a 14th Century book of hours (pp27-34). Wraps designed by Georges Rouault. Lacking at least the contents leaves. Chipping to lower edge, esp. at front. Loss to lower right of front wrap. Corners creased/curled.
