Tractate Baba Metziah with commentaries, printed following the efforts of Rabbi Avraham David Horowitz, Augsburg, 5706 [1946].
119, 25, [3] leaves, 325 cm. The Tractate was printed separately, not as part of the Shas. On the title page, there is a photograph of the manuscript and it is written: printed following the efforts and labors of the Gaon, Morenu Harav Avraham David Horowitz, Shlita [Dayan U’Morei Zedek of the Kehilat Hakodesh (the Holy Congregation) of Grosswardeyn] … the Rabbi and Head of the Holy Beit Din, Augsburg – Landsburg, may the L-rd preserve it and keep it alive, in order to strengthen the study of the holy Torah for the dispersed of the She'erit Ha’pletah (the Jewish survivors), may G-d keep them alive and preserve them.
Harav Avraham David Horowitz was formerly known as the Rabbi of Strasbourg, and then was known as one of the heads of the Eidah Haredit in Jerusalem. His wife and five children perished in the Holocaust. After the Holocaust he served officially as the Rabbi of the Augsburg and Landsburg Camps.
In a copy of the Siddur She'erit Ha’pletah printed by Rabbi Horowitz in Augsburg, 5706, and found in the library of Bar Ilan, there is, apart from the title page, a short preface and a printed photograph of the handwriting that says: A thanksgiving offering… Hashem the Blessed One has shown His loving-kindness in keeping me alive. Hashem the Blessed One has helped me to bring to print Tractate Baba Metziah.
However, up until now there was no known Tractate which was printed from it. In the Bibliographical Project (Mifal Habibliographia) a similar Tractate was recorded with no mention of Rabbi Horowitz. A different title page was printed that says: “With all the commentaries as printed earlier and with new additions as detailed in the second title page,†though the editors of the Mifal Habibliographia have pointed out that there is no second title page. With the title page here, it says that this is the Tractate that Rabbi Horowitz printed! In the National Library there is a partial copy of only a small part of the book.
