The book is entitled; Woman Suffrage by Federal Constitutional Amendment, by Carrie Chapman Catt, published by the National Woman Suffrage Publishing Co., N.Y., 1917 and with presentation inscription on free front end paper reading ‘To Congressman Augustus P. Gardner Compliments Carrie Chapman Catt’ in black ink. This book is a D (4.75 x 7.5 inch) book in dark blue buckram boards with gilt lettering on spine and front board with 100pages. This lot also has an autographed cover on printed U.S. House of Representatives cover signed by Congressman Augustus P. Gardner in ink. Carrie Chapman Catt (1859-1947) was an American women’s suffrage leader who campaigned for the Nineteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which gave U.S. women the right to vote in 1920. Catt served as president of the National American Woman Suffrage Association and was the founder of the League of Women Voters and the International Alliance of Women. She led an army of voteless women in 1919 to pressure Congress to pass the constitutional amendment giving them the right to vote and convinced state legislatures to ratify it in 1920 and was one of the best-known women in the United States in the first half of the twentieth century and was on all lists of famous American women (Wikipedia 2014). Augustus Peabody Gardner (1865-1918) was an officer in the U.S. Army & Representative from Massachusetts in the U.S. House. Gardner was the son-in-law of Henry Cabot Lodge. Harvard law Grad, Capt. in the Spanish American War. Gardner resigned from Congress to enter the army during WWI, he served at Governors Island. He was a colonel in the Adjutant General’s Department, and later was transferred at his own request to the 131st Regiment, United States Infantry, with the rank of major. He died of pneumonia while on active duty at Camp Wheeler, near Macon, Ga. on January 14, 1918 (Wikipedia 2014). This lot also includes a TLS from Augustus P. Gardner with cover on letterhead letter sheet of Committee on Ways and means House of Representatives Washington, D.C., dated April 18, 1917 and addressed to Edward L. Darling, Esq., Ipswich, Mass. The letter tells Darling that the 3rd Assistant Postmaster will be sending him a map of the postal routes in Massachusetts and that Gardner has paid the 80 cent cost of the map. Signed in black ink at bottom. Darling was working as a clerk for the Federal Post Office in Ipswich at the time (Federal Census: 1910 &1920).
