Description
Fine Oil on Canvas Portrait of a Stunning Woman by Charles H. Kingsmore c. 1858. In original period oval heavy gold gesso frame with alternating thumbprint, and laurel leaf band border. In frame 32"x38"x3". Weight approximately 22 pds. Restoration above head and hair. Charles H. Kingsmore was a portrait painter and photographer living and working in Newberry SC. Before the Civil War Kingmore painted portraits and produced photographs in his Newberry Studio over Hunt & Brothers store on the south side of the public square. He reopened his studio after the war and advertised that he was "Prepared to take Ambrotypes and Photographs" and that he would also visit the country or neighboring towns to paint portraits. He also painted a portrait of South Carolina Governor William Henry Gist's daughter. Ellen Douglas Gist. PROVENANCE: Edwin Moore Brogdon, PhD, collection. Dr. Brogdon was the owner of Brogdon Manor, a stately plantation home, located in the Brogdon Community, near Sumter, SC. The home was built in 1898 by his grandfather William Turner Brogdon. The Brogdon community was comprised of a local country store, cotton gin, sawmill and dairy.
