DESCRIPTION: American School (18th/19th Century). Portrait of William Bradford (b. Philadelphia, PA, 1755 - 1795). In gilt frame. Two labels to the back, one label marked Wm Bradford and the other marked illegibly. MEASUREMENTS: 30" x 24-3/4"; frame 7". CONDITION: Relined. Areas of in-painting in hair. Areas of loss to frame. William Bradford (1755 - 1795) was a lawyer and judge from Philadelphia. He was educated at the Academy of Philadelphia and Princeton. He served in the Revolutionary War as a colonel. After the war, Bradford practiced law in York, PA. and became Pennsylvania's Attorney General (1780 - 1791). He was appointed to be a justice on the Pennsylvania Supreme Court and in 1794 he served as the U.S. Attorney General until his death in 1795.
