West Shore Railroad Brasstop Lantern RC Globe

Description

The New York West Shore & Buffalo had a few different markings on their lanterns. This one has the simple "WSRR" marking. Some have "NYWS&BRR". Both the frame and globe are marked WSRR. The frame is a fine Steam Gauge Lamp & Lantern company product. It's not marked but the following attributes peg it as a Steam Gauge: (1) Distinctive vent hole area with larger center holes, (2) distinctive bail ears, (3) intake holes are in a very tight pattern. This is a single piece frame and (4) it has a correct pinch pot assembly with a rolled edge. Note that a vintage burner will be included but is not in the photographs. The metal is very clean and the brass top is minty. There are no detractions at all.
The globe is an outstanding example of a 6" tear drop that is cast WSRR in a rectangular panel. The letters are crisp and strong. The red is flashed meaning there is a thin coating of red applied to the inside of a clear globe. Red glass was very expensive to manufacture int eh 1800s so flashing was popular until about 1900. There are some minor flakes off of the flashing on the extended base portion of the globe. This is a complete "no show" when the globe is in the frame.
The West Shore was built to compete with the New York Central Railroad. They did well enough that the NYC bought them out. What a thorn in the side with was to the Vanderbilt interests. The name West Shore refers to the side fo the Hudson the line ran on. Along the Mohawk River it could have been the South Shore.
This lantern is a great example of 1800s craftsmanship. It is a great display piece.
