Description
This is an unusual lantern with a brass top, wire bottom and a 5 3/8" size globe. I've only ever seen these made by Railroad Signal Lamp & Lantern Co in New York. This one is stamped NYNH&HRR on the lid for the New York New Haven & Hartford Railroad. The brass top has the faint stamping that is typical of the Railroad Signal Lamp & Lantern Company. It has a spin-down top rather than a spring assembly to retain the globe. The vent area on the top has a n April 1883 patent date stamping. There is additional information stamped to the right of this and it is very hard to make out. The base has an 1897 patent embossed into the metal. It has a twist off base with a tin fount.
The globe is an outstanding 5 3/8" height with an extened base and NYNH&HRR cast in a rectangular panel. The lettering is very crisp. This is one of the best exaples of this design that I have ever seen.
