Description
This is a Railroad Signal Lamp & Lantern Company lantern frame. It has the light stamping in the brass top. It takes a stanard 5 3/8" globe. It's also a single piece frame that uses a pinch pot assembly for the fount. The top has an April 24 1883 patent stamping under the vent holes. The base has a August 31, 1875 patent marking. The top uses a spin-down ratchet rather than a spring to hold the globe in place. The lid is nicely stamped H&CW RR in typical smaller Railroad Signal Co lettering. The base has a glass fount.
It just gets better with the globe. It is a 5 3/8" red cast with CNE RR cast in a rectangular panel. The globe is flashed red meaning a thin layer fo red glass is applied to the inside of the clear globe. The globe has a nice extended base. There is ome typical flaking of rthe red flashing here and there. This is not a common globe.
The H&CW only existed from 1881-1890. This is a great New Haven predecessor from an obscure line. Please note that I use the word rare sparingly. This is a rare lantern in this condition.
