Description
PHOTOGRAPHIC RECORD OF LT. GEN. ROBERY C. RICHARDSON, JR. TOUR OF SAIPAN THE MARSHALL ISLANDS.
Important collection of approx. 200 war-date photographs documenting tours of Saipan and the Marshall Islands taken by Gen. Robert C. Richardson, Jr. in 1944. Presented in a binder reading: "VISITS TO FORWARD AREAS I", and signed by Richardson on the cover, this report shows Richardson's arrival on Saipan and meeting Gen. George Griner, commander of forces on the island; a visit to an internment camp, a hospital and cemetery, a tour of shattered Garapan; a memorial service for American soldiers killed on the island, and a review of the troops. Richardson then traveled to the Marshall Islands, where he viewed shattered Japanese bunkers and airfields, met with Adm. Chester Nimitz (of whom there are many candid photos) and Gen. Holland M. Smith, visited a cemetery, and so on, with many views of destroyed aircraft, dead Japanese, sunken landing craft, and more. Most of these photos bear no attribution - we believe that they are original and one-of-a-kind, taken by Navy and Army photographers and given to Richardson for use in his report. Very good. ROBERT C. RICHARDSON, JR. (1882-1954) was an American Army Lieutenant General, Commanding General of the Hawaiian Department, Military Governor of Hawaii, and commanded all Army personnel in the Pacific Ocean Areas and Mid-Pacific.
