Item Details

Description

Framed signature of Union General Jefferson C. Davis. A cut from a letter reads, “Yours Very Truly, Jeff C. Davis Bvt. Maj. Gen” in bold period ink.

Davis, from Indiana, was promoted to Brigadier General for service at Pea Ridge, Arkansas and went on to see action at Corinth, Murfreesboro, Chickamagua, and the Atlanta Campaign. He is perhaps most notable for killing his superior officer, Gen. William “Bull” Nelson, during a bad argument, an incident for which he faced little consequence due to a shortage of experienced Union field commanders.

The signature has been professionally framed along with a period engraving of Davis.
