Description
1903 Wedding Gown embroidered by the Royal School of Needlework. This very beautiful soft satin wedding gown was originally made for an aristocratic Dorset family. Hence the wonderful embroidery which will wet the appetite of anyone interested in the art and skill, featuring 'satin, stem and French knots in silk, silk floss and a very fine chenille. The overlapping rings which encircle the skirt and the train are alternately covered in silk and silk floss.' The dress has been altered over many years, loved and enjoyed. Soon after the wedding the high necked pin tucked under bodice and sleeves were removed and it was worn as a ball gown. Much later it was worn by a young lady on horseback in the Bridport Pageant of the 1950's - it's large train decorating the horses flanks!! And more recently in the 1980's the bodice was altered in order for it to be worn once again as a wedding gown. (1)
