Description
Costa Rica, Chiriqui, ca. 1000 to 1500 CE. Imagine the brilliantly colored tree frogs inhabiting the lush rain forests of Costa Rica and Panama. These amphibian creatures are the inspiration for goldwork of the region. Cast by the lost-wax or cire perdue process, Costa Rican goldworks range from naturalistic to abstract and stylized. This piece incorporates a blend of aesthetics, boasting an intriguing contrast between the lifelike, smooth surface and three dimensional form of the frog's head, abdomen, and legs relative to the flattened feet and stylized serpentine tongue. While not visible from the front, suspension loops are located on each side of the head. High karat gold, 19.7 grams. 1.75"L x 1.25"W
