Native American, Southwestern United States, Arizona, Chaco Canyon, Anasazi (Ancestral Puebloan), ca. 975 to 1150 CE. A tall pottery bowl of hemispherical form with a stable base and a thin rim. Inside the white-ground vessel is a tall decorative program consisting of black-painted triangles that form broad rectangular bands filled with zigzagging negative spaces; the rim and basin center are undecorated. Anasazi pottery was created by coiling clay and smoothing the surface before painting, then finally firing, and their pottery was an invaluable utilitarian item for storing agricultural goods as well as a beautiful commodity for trading.
