Description

GEORGIAN BRITISH CANVASWORK NEEDLEWORK PICTURE, wool and silk on linen canvas, completed in fine tent stitching, depicting a kitchen scene with a man sitting and preparing food on a plate laid on the ground, possibly mussels, the background featuring a man standing next to a woman cooking with a pot over a fire to the left, the right with a boy picking at fruit on a table having a rabbit and a bird hanging on the wall, lower left corner signed "MARY WARD:1754". Housed under glass in an old painting and gilt frame. Dated 1754. 17 5/8" x 11 1/2" sight, 23 1/4" x 17 1/8" OA.
Catalogue Note: Object catalogue entry describes this as "Needlework picture of taniers", possibly after a work by David Teniers the Younger (Flemish, 1610-1690).

Property deaccessioned by the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, Williamsburg, VA. All proceeds to benefit the collection acquisition fund.

Condition

Good to very good visual condition with overall toning, thread with some fugitive color and minor losses, frame with wear, craquelure, flakes, and other imperfections. Not examined out of frame.
