Description

Very few printed pieces are of more importance in the history of Ohio than this survey of a part of the future state. Considered by some as the map that began the opening to the American West, and which established the groundwork for the American westward expansion. An essential map for Ohio collectors and of tremendous importance in the history of American cartography. Mathew Carey's map of the Seven Ranges, published in Carey's General Atlas in 1816. This is the same map that was published in Carey’s 1814 General Atlas. The map was engraved by William Barker and is based upon Thomas Hutchins Survey of 1785. Hutchins, who was the first (and only) Geographer of the United States, surveyed the lands into ranges and townships that would become the standard system in the US and elsewhere. The first effort to survey the lands shown began in 1785 but was abandoned due to Indian hostilities and was resumed when joined by a military escort in 1786. Hutchins personally oversaw the survey of the first four ranges. On the map, the lands of the Ohio Company are noted along with other points of considerable historical importance. Some offsetting and very small chip at top right (repaired). 13.25 x 24
