Item Details
Description
Scarce and fine map of the area around St. Louis, prepared under the supervision of Robert E. Lee when he was a lieutenant. Engraved map with folds as issued and later hand coloring. A detailed map of the Mississippi River, centered on St. Louis. Shows the parts of the river from Cahoe Island in the south to Cascarot Island in the north. Measurements of distance and water depth given from shore to shore. Connecting the cross section measurements are compass headings to get from point to point. The banks of the river show topographical features and locations of individual building stores—including some with family names. During the 1830s, the formation of Bloody Island moved the primary channel of the river to the Illinois side, causing an increased buildup of silt in St. Louis Harbor. Robert E. Lee, then a young engineering officer, was tasked to come up with a plan to solve this problem. The map illustrates his plan to build two dikes on either side of Bloody Island that would redirect the main flow of water to the west side of the island, clearing all the silt from St. Louis. The project proved to be a success and within two decades the silt was clear from St. Louis and Bloody Island had become a part of the riverbank on the Illinois side of the Mississippi. Outside the city several Indian Mounds, Mills and Lime Kilns are located. Drawn by Lt. Meigs who later became a general and was instrumental in developing and maintaining Arlington National Cemetery. Engraved by W. J. Stone. An extraordinary example with just a single closed tear in the left margin extending just into the “O” of “Cahoe Island.” 16.5 x 42.5
