Description

First Mitchell edition and printing of this detailed and interesting map of Kentucky, hand-colored by county and showing towns, rivers, lakes, railroads, roads, distances, forts, and more. This very scarce map is a lithographic engraving produced by the somewhat mysterious engraver H. N. Burroughs whose name appears on early Mitchell maps. The decorative borders on the map were designed by Carey & Hart during Henry S. Tanner’s tenure in the atlas publishing business. Mitchell bought the business from Tanner in late 1845, keeping the Carey & Hart designs for the first printing only. In the second printing later that same year he swapped out those borders with a new design. Thus, the first printing maps—though quite scarce--are easy to identify. Tables of steamboat routes and distances are included to make this a singular-looking map. Contains large insets of the Lexington area, the Washington and Clarksburg area, and the Falls of Ohio, showing Louisville and its environs and the Louisville and Portland Canal bypassing the falls. Clean within the frame. Few small and light bits of foxing in the bottom margin. Light toning to edges, typical of early Mitchell atlas maps. When matted, the toning won’t show. 11.5 x 13.75
