Description

Large and important early copper engraved map of the western U. S. showing the route of Col. Henry Dodge’s 1835 Expedition from Fort Leavenworth to the Rocky Mountains. Rare first printing with original outline hand color. Cornerstone 1836 map of the western United States showing all the country from western Missouri to the Rocky Mountains, and from Santa Fe north to the Black Hills. Kansas and Nebraska are referred to here as “Western Territory.” The map is considered a watershed in the cartography of the American Plains. It was drawn mainly to show the locations of various Indian peoples, identifying the lands of eighteen tribes, which included the Otoes, Kickapoos, Pawnees, Omahas, Osages, Creeks, Kioway, Potawatamies and Comanche. One of the earliest maps to depict and name Pike’s Peak. Santa Fe is in the lower left (“Touse” is Taos). Some American historians consider this map one of the three most important of the 1830s. It is unknown how many of the 500 original first printing copies survive. A wonderfully clean and sound example with full margins and no paper loss. Very minor toning at a single section fold. Few spots of very light foxing in upper left and top right margin corners. 3.5” tear at far-left fold, professionally repaired with conservator’s tape on verso —it is difficult to see the repair even with higher illumination. Small intersection separation repaired on verso. A treasure rarely offered at auction. 19.5 x 35
