Description

Early and rare map of the old Northwest Territory. In this map the area of Michigan has yet to be understood. The extents of Saginaw Bay and Green Bay are also more or less guessed at. The map reflects a very early appearance of Michigan Territory (organized 1805), which had not yet appeared separately on any map. The Upper Peninsula is still not part of Michigan Territory. The appearance of Illinois and Indiana are among the earliest on a printed map. Illinois is shown quite a bit west of its true location. An important map of the region. This example comes from a variation of his 1816 General Atlas (see title page photo) made up from the same maps appearing in the 1814 atlas. Mathew Carey maps from this time period are either rare or extremely scarceâ€”most of them are rarely available and can have an extremely wide variation in pricing. Wide margins. Small bit of discoloring caused by coloring on reverse. Tiny bit of offsetting. 12.625 x 18.875
