Description

Scarce first edition example of Samuel Augustus Mitchell and H. N. Burrough’s 1846 map of Virginia showing the state in the Antebellum Era. With the Carey & Hart decorative borders that don’t show up in the later 1846 edition (nor in all other Mitchell atlases), this is actually a rare transitional map filling the gap between the atlas maps of Henry Tanner and the senior Mitchell. Depicts all of Virginia, as it appeared in 1846 and shows the state in its enlarged form before West Virginia seceded to form its own separate state during the Civil War (1863). As noted in the title, numerous roads, railways and canals had been built across Virginia, making it an important nexus for interstate trade. The upper right section of the map shows a profile of the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal which was completed in 1831, a critical waterway linking the Midwest and the Mississippi Basin with the Atlantic Seaboard. A table along the bottom of the map details the distances between several points in the state. The Chesapeake Bay is shown in its entirety. Shows towns, rivers, islands, bays, inlets and other coastal features. Few mild spots in the margin (won’t show when matted). Light toning at the edges. 11.5 x 13.75
