Description
A Marshal's bicorne hat, circa 1810Black felt, beaver fur with front and back halves turned up to form semi-circular fan shape, white ostrich feathers hand-applied to the inside of each half. Right side with bi-color cockade of red/white/blue brocade fabric at top, three gilt-metallic braided cords draped across cockade and wrapped around a gilt button with French imperial coat of arms in relief, pinned to hat brim. Lined in white silk with tailor name impressed in gilt "JOLY Rue du Bac, N?.52. PARIS", light-brown soft leather sweatband. In excellent condition with minor repairs and restoration to exterior surface, inside silk lining with damage from age and wear. In accordance with Napoleonic regulations, only three appointments existed where the use of ostrich trim was allowed.
