Item Details
Description
Battle of the Nile: a creamware mug, circa 1810
Probably Dawson & Co, Sunderland, printed in black with 'Lord Nelson Engaging the Toulon Fleet of the Mouths of the Nile', the battle in full swing, inscribed below 'The Young Alexander of France May boast of his prowess in vain, When Nelson appears tis confest That Britons are Lords of the Main', 14.7cm high
Footnotes:
Provenance
Bonhams, 12 September 2007, lot 77

The Alexandrian coastline looms to the right of the battle scene, emphasising the extraordinary British tactic whereby the fleet split in two and sandwiched the French in a punishing crossfire. David Drakard illustrates a jug with the same print, the reverse print incorporating the name of Sunderland potters Dawson & Co, Low Ford, see Printed English Pottery (1992), p.177, fig.478.
Condition
In good condition, save for some tiny nibbles to the footrim, one larger flat chip to the inside edge of the footrim is approximately 1cm wide and of little significance. The printed decoration remains well with very few, minor and short scratches only.
