A remarkable Bow mug, circa 1758-60
Of cylindrical form with a heart-shaped terminal at the handle, printed in iron-red with three vignettes from the 'Youthful Diversions' series, comprising 'Battledore and Shuttlecock', 'Blind Man's Buff' and 'Whip Top', the children standing among rococo scrollwork, a brightly enamelled floral border around the rim, a chip on the inside rim fully glazed over during manufacture, 12.4cm high
Footnotes:
Provenance
Robyn Robb Collection
The 'Youthful Diversions' series was designed by Hubert Gravelot and occurs in a range of colours on Bow and Worcester porcelain, presumed to be the work of Robert Hancock, from whose hand eight different subjects are recorded. These were printed with particular care at Bow, combined successfully with this hand-painted border.
