Browne as president and J.E. Dixon as secretary (these are the same two corporate officers as the Independence Mining Company of Tuscarora). The Belle Isle was one of the major producers in Tuscarora from 1867 to 1915. 2) Independence Mining Company stock certificate, No. 5599, issued to Richardson Hill & Co, on September 20, 1879. The mine was 1 of 6 in an east-west band through the center of the district and by 1884 it was levying heavy assessments. 3) Tuscarora Mill & Mining Company stock certificate, No. 1348, issued to E.R. Grant for 50 shares on February 14, 1879 in San Francisco. "Location, Tuscarora District, Elko Co., Nev." printed at top center. Signed by president Benjamin and secretary Spaulding(?). According to the Weekly Independent, dated November 2, 1879, the company bought the Castle Mine from S.B McDonald. On July 27, 1879, they bought the atlas Ledge from A. Mayer. In 1876 a bonanza was found in Tuscarora, richest vein in the area. Over the next year, a lot of mining machines and miners came to work there. By the following year it became a booming mining town with almost 5000 people. Production more than doubled making it the largest mining district in northern Nevada. At its' largest production period it had a post office, numerous restaurants and saloons, a number of churches, public schools, a private school, two newspapers, ballroom and ballet dancing academies, Independent Order of Good and Odd Fellow Templars and the lodges of the Masons. During full production there were over 10 silver mines and six mills that processed ore. Between years of 1878 and 1884 silver bullion worth millions of dollars was mined annually. 4) Diana Gold & Silver Mining Company stock certificate, No. 1189, issued to James Rolph for 100 shares on July 12, 1887 in San Francisco. On May 28, 1864 the Sacramento Daily Union report that the major lodes in Alpine Valley were the Galena, Iron City, Silver Prize, Galena Chief and Bay State. A May 30, 1864 article in the Daily Alta California lists the best mines with the IXL leading the pack. Other major producers are the Buckeye, Fremont and Lady Franklin. But also showing great promise is the Silver Prize, George Washington, Murphy, Nob, St. Charles, Uncle Sam, Mountain, Pennsylvania and Sierra Nevada.
