Description
THEY MADE ME A CRIMINAL
Half Sheet (22" x 28")
Fine- on Paper
Warners Bros., 1939
This is a rare half sheet, and we find no record of it being sold in auction in the last 20+ years.
The borders of this half sheet have been airbrushed, and there are some touch-ups to the edge of the image and in the title.
In this exceptional crime drama, John Garfield plays Johnny Bradfield, a professional boxer falsely accused of murder. As the only witness who could prove his innocence died in a car crash, Bradfield takes in on the lam. Relocating to Arizona, he meets a group of delinquents (the Dead End Kids), whom he tries to turn to the straight and narrow. That is until the law catches up with him in the person of Detective Monty Phelan (Claude Rains). The Dead End Kids started on Broadway in a production of Sidney Kingsley's Dead End in 1935. Shortly after that, Sam Goldwyn brought them to Hollywood, where he cast them in the film version of the play, directed by Busby Berkeley.
This lot will be auctioned on Thursday, April 18th. The auction will begin at 9:30am PST and lots are sold sequentially via live auctioneer; tune in to the live streaming broadcast on auction day to follow the pace. Note other lots in the auction may close on April 19th.
