Native American, Southwestern United States, Northern Arizona, Havasupai / Hualapai, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A fine pedestal style woven basket twined from native plants and peeled rods, likely willow, cottonwood, or sumac, and the splints are probably devil's claw or cat's claw. Havasupai and Hualapai are neighboring tribes in the Grand Canyon region, both had similar styles and usually twined rather than coiling their basketry. Due to a semi-nomadic lifestyle, they heavily relied on woven vessels rather than pottery for most of their needs. This unusual pedestal shape was probably not utilitarian and perhaps a sale item, but its purpose is unknown. Size: 10" Diameter x 10.5" H (25.4 cm x 26.7 cm)

Entire rim is covered with clear adhesive to stabilize and prevent unraveling. Slightly uneven / misshapen rim, likely from storage. Good condition and tightly woven.
