Description
Native American, American Midwest and Southeast, Mississippian, ca. 11th to 14th century CE. A hand-built pottery bowl of sizable form exhibiting a spherical body and petite nodules protruding in groups of 3 around the rim. Both the interior and exterior surfaces feature a pleasing espresso-brown hue intermingled with lighter brown. The shell-tempering technique is when the material used consists of a shell temper mixture, as the fine-grained clay from the regions often shrinks excessively, and the addition of shell particles reduces this shrinkage greatly when firing. Size: 9.9" Diameter x 7.1" H (25.1 cm x 18 cm)
