Description
Native American, Southwestern United States, New Mexico, Mimbres Valley, Mimbres, ca. 1025 to 1250 CE. An attractive pottery bowl of hemispherical form with a deep interior basin adorned with black-on-white decoration. Though the exterior is enveloped in white slip, the interior boasts a complex tondo of a central meander motif surrounded by jagged striped and black-filled forms. A pair of horizontal bands surround the interior rim with several crisscross designs falling between them and the central tondo. Marking the center is a kill hole which researchers believe was ritually punctured prior to placing the vessel over the face of a deceased individual, perhaps to provide a channel for the spirit to the afterlife while keeping out malevolent forces. Size: 10.5" L x 9.5" W x 5.5" H (26.7 cm x 24.1 cm x 14 cm)
