Archive

A small archive of cartes-de-visites and documents, nine items in total, related to various prominent Civil War military figures and governors. Includes four CDVs, two signed slips, and three signed documents. Varying degrees of toning, soiling, wear, and foxing. Please refer to the photographs for further condition information.

Includes the following:
1. Henry Wise Clipped Signature: Small slip of lined paper measuring 1" x 4.875" at its largest, No place, undated. Taken from a larger document or letter, the clipped signature is boldly signed "Henry A. Wise, Brig. Gen. C.S.A.".
2. Salmon P. Chase CDV: Carte de visite portrait of Salmon P. Chase. Measuring 2.375" x 4", n.d., n.p. Chest-up portrait of American politician Salmon P. Chase. Evidence of prior framing to corners.
3. U.S. Cavalry General George A. Forsyth Signed Slip: 1p, measuring 6.25" x 4", n.p., n.d. A signed slip or card, "Geo: A. Forsyth U.S. Army." Bold and large signature.
4. Harriet & Henry Wilson Cartes de Visite: Both measuring 2.5" x 5". The first is an image of a seated Vice President Henry Wilson in a three-piece suit with a strong gaze in the direction of the camera. Featuring a J.W. Black back-stamp. "Hon Henry Wilson" has been written on the bottom. The second is a portrait of a standing Harriet Malvina Wilson, the former Second Lady of the United States, Washington, D.C. With a Whitehurst Gallery stamp on verso.
5. Henry A. Wise DS: 1p partly printed page, measuring 7.75" x 10.", Richmond, dated May 25, 1857. Signed "Henry A. Wise" near center-right. On onion-skin paper blind-embossed with the state seal of Virginia at center left. Secretarially inscribed and signed, presumably in the hand of Secretary of the Commonwealth George W. Munford. The document stated in part that Virginia Governor Henry A. Wise "hath constituted and appointed Augustus C. Daws of the City of Houston a Commissioner for this Commonwealth, in the State of Texas?"
6. Joseph E. Brown Signed Partial Doc Relating to Furloughs: Partial document on pale blue paper does not have any visible place or date listed recto, but it is docketed verso as: "Savannah / Apl 21st 1863 / BW Harder / Surgeon. / In regard to his being / allowed to grant / furloughs to sick / soldiers +c." Boldly signed by Georgia Governor Joseph E. Brown vertically along the left edge. The massive signature measures 5" x 1.25" alone. An embossed seal reading "Executive Department / Georgia" is found at lower right.
7. John A. Andrew CDV Signed By His Son: Measuring 2.5" x 4", n.p., n.d. A carte-de-visite vignette side-profile portrait of Massachusetts governor John Albion Andrew. Signed and inscribed on verso by his son, John F. Andrew to "Cousin Louisa with the affectionate regards of J.F. Andrew." No backstamp present.
8. Joseph E. Brown Signed Appointment: 1p, measuring 6.25" x 4.5", Milledgeville, Georgia, dated April 29, 1862. Signed by Georgia Governor Joseph E. Brown vertically along the left edge. Issued from Georgia Militia Headquarters, appointing Robert H. Rowland an Aid-de-Camp with the rank of Colonel. Counter-signed by H.H. Waters. Docketed verso.
