A signed post office appointment by Franklin Pierce. 1p, measuring 7" x 4.25" (sight), Washington, D.C., dated March 29, 1850. Signed "Franklin Pierce" as President appointing Henry St. George Offutt to "discharge the duties of Sixth Auditor of the Treasury for the Post Office Department, during the absence & sickness of William F. Phillips Esquire." With a tear at the lower right corner affecting part of Pierce's signature. Toning, soiling, and some staining throughout. Boldly signed by Pierce.

Henry St. George Offutt (1821-1894) would go on to be named as a Special Agent for the New York County, NY Post Office on May 10, 1860. He was then appointed Assistant Postmaster for the Confederate States of America the following year. He also joined the Confederate Army, serving as a Private in at Company B, 3rd Virginia Infantry, Local Defense.
