Description
Luba, Bowl Carrier
40 cm (1' 4"), Congo-Zaire
The Luba people are the largest ethnic group in Zaire and are renowned for their excellent carvings. Special care is given to the depiction of the head and the abundant scar tattoos, as evident in this excellent object. It represents a woman who, sitting on her legs, holds a calabash in an offering position. The finely carved face in the typical Luba style is characterized by a lowered gaze. A tribal-typical hairstyle with a braided hairband adorns this figure. The neck is ring-shaped and leads into a beautifully crafted upper body, covered with decorative scars and featuring a beautiful age patina. A rare object of museum quality.
