Description
Hawai'i
Kou wood
16,5 x 32,5 cm Ø
Labels on the inside edge: 'I.A. Jenkins collection', 'no. 17' (damaged)
Provenance:
Irving Jenkins, Honolulu
Sale Sotheby's, Paris, 4 December 2008, lot 51
Property from a Princely collection
This umeke la'au illustrates perfectly the craftsmanship of Hawaiian woodworkers: the kou wood has been cut transversely in order to bring out the undulating lines created by the contrasting heartwood and sapwood. Polished to perfection and of elegant proportions, it epitomizes the aesthetics of the Hawai'ian so-called calabash.
Traditional reparations by means of butterfly pegs (pewa), breadfruit gum (kepau) and small round pegs (huini), holding in place 2 insets (poho), one triangular and another rectangular, testify of its importance.
This bowl used to belong to the collection of Irving Jenkins, author of "The Hawaiian Calabash" (Editions Limited, Honolulu, 1989).
